Ladies: 7 Ways to pamper yourself (not your partner) this Valentine’s Day! 😍
I know this seems a little mean but it actually isn’t – let me explain…
The minute, and I mean the second, that we start taking good care of ourselves we feel better mentally and physically – and what happens then?….we are a lot nicer to be around and we’re way more free flowing with the love giving (so you’ll partner will benefit much more in the long run 😉)
We’ve often heard the expression “You can’t pour from an empty teapot” This is soooo true – if you’re constantly putting yourself to the bottom of your “to do” list you’ll soon find that other people do it too. If you are forever looking after your partner and putting them first instead of yourself then they tend to get a little too comfortable with things and usually take you for granted. You end up feeling crap about yourself and worse of all its actually your own fault (sad but true). This is a lose-lose situation that you don’t want to find yourself in.
Its the same with your children – they are led by example and if you always put them first they’ll end up spoilt little shits! ( I’ve learned a few things along the way and teenagers are especially bad at this)
With this in mind, I have prepared a little pamper session for you.
No.1 Go to bed early the night before.
Be in bed by 10 pm at the latest. Why is this so important? Staying awake until the early hours of the morning is usually great fun (unless you’re working) but you always feel like crap in the morning. (I went to bed at 2 am last night and feel like I have a hangover right now – not cool). Over time if you constantly go to bed late then you’re depriving your body of the time it needs to recover and rejuvenate. 😟
Going to bed on time is good for you for a number of boring yet very important reasons: productivity, health, wrinkles, weigh-loss – the list goes on so just make sure you get to bed on time – even if its just one night.
Remember though…set your alarm for 40 minutes before everyone else in the house will be up. You’ll see why in No.2
No.2 Listen to this Podcast…
When you wake up early, turn your phone on (coz you wouldn’t want to be sleeping with it on – its bad for you) and then listen to this podcast…Meditate to Feel Great
Absolute Mind is a podcast by Paula Sweet. Paula is a Life Coach and trained Hypnotherapist. I LOVE Hypnotherapy and cannot recommend it enough. A hypnotherapy session is usually about 30 minutes to 1 hour of deep relaxation where someone tells your subconscious mind how fab you are, ergo making it a lot easier to transition into better habits. It totally works for me – I try to listen to my podcast first thing in the morning before anyone is up and when I “come to” I always feel great and ready to kick some horrible habit I’ve had for centuries.
There are a number of episodes to choose from so you can pick one that relates to you and something that you’d like to improve.
You have titles such as: Keeping Exercise Motivation, Why do you Feel Lost, How to be Less Angry, How to think More Positively, Preparing for Weight Loss, Walking away from a Toxic Relationship, Dealing with Panic Attacks, Increase Self Esteem.
As this post is all about ways you can pamper yourself I would defiantly go with Meditate to Feel Great episode – studies how that meditation is essential to feeling well, eliminating negative thoughts, worries, anxieties and it can help block out all those factors that can prevent us from feeling happy from within.
In the episode, Paula talks for about 12 minutes about the benefits of mediation and then takes you through a 30-minute deep relaxation hypnotherapy session. It’s completely harmless and you can only benefit from this, trust me… it’s amazing!
No.3 Try and Get a Sweat On
If you’re not a fan of exercise then I feel completely understand..me too. However, something that I have come to realise in my older years is that exercise is not just something people do to lose weight. Nope, its something people do to feel good about themselves. This may sound super obvious to people that have exercised for years but for me, I am only just starting to realise the mental benefits. I’ve come to realise a little secret about people that exercise – they feel smug about themselves – smug in a good way. Smug like…”I just worked out and I’m one of “those people” (yunno – the super fit cool people that exercise) I’ve also come to realise that the people that exercise feel better about themselves as they tend to think that they’re “worth it”. They aren’t putting themselves at the bottom of their to-do list – they are making time and fitting in a workout… Well YOU’RE worth it too so make sure you do some exercise today – you’ll get to feel super smug and all day you’ll get to be “one of those people”
Even if its just a fast walk or a 15 minute Joe Wicks YouTube video (he has great videos for beginners) – try and get your heartbeat up a little and use muscles you haven’t used before – try doing a press-up. They’re bloody difficult and you’ll feel the burn and tomorrow when you have sore arms you can feel smug about yourself.
No.4 Do a bit of Self-Massage.
I have a very weird and wonderful collection of massage tools under my bed and they’re mostly so I can massage myself – hahaha – I know that sounds bad (or good) but what I mean is that you can get tools that you can use to massage your own back, legs arms, shoulders etc. Let’s be honest – not every partner wants to sit there giving you regular massages (I know this because I’ve asked) so you have to find ways to DIY.
Tools that can help you reach those places by yourself. Here is a fab list of self-massage tools – http://www.independent.co.uk/extras/indybest/outdoor-activity/best-massage-tools-a6897461.html
No.5 Take Yourself on a Date
Treat yourself to a fancy date. Sounds corny I know but have a think about what you want to do for a night out and don’t treat yourself like a cheap date; go fancy…impress yourself. You can either go alone or you can take a friend/your partner. If it feels weird to be treating yourself just imagine your booking it for a friend – what would you do for them?
You could book an overnight getaway in a boutique hotel, you could book a day off work and drive to the beach, you could go and see a show, you could take a new class in something you’ve always wanted to try, you could book a photo session with your friends or family, you could even splash out on a life coach or therapy (life changing stuff!)
No.6 Hog the TV ALL Night
This is the best (and one of my favourite) ways to spend an evening. Buy a decent bottle of wine (got to cost more than a tenner), a packet of crisps, and some Lindt chocolate and you’re set. If you are choosing to hog the TV but have to watch with someone else then they need to be prepared to not judge in anyway shape or form the programs you choose – so pre-warm then to keep schtum.
If you are on your own then I recommend the following binge classics
GIRLS – an HBO classic with 6 seasons. Its a comedy-drama about an aspiring writer in New York – her name is Hannah and the show is about her and her friends. Its hilarious, liberating and full of bad words and naughty bits. I would hover over that pause button just in case anyone should walk in!
Insecure – Another HBO hit – they are just making Season 3. Its a comedy-drama about a woman called Issa, she’s in her late twenties and trying to figure out what she wants in life. She has a friend called Molly (a corporate lawyer) and they hang out and try and find the right men and they explore social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience. Its funny as….
Suits – Into its seventh season and its a massive hit in my house. I watch this with my teenagers – there’s nothing too risqué about it but there’s lots of drama and will they/ won’t they type stuff going on. The characters really develop over the seasons and you get really attached to them.
UnReal – This show is DRAMA. It follows the cast and crew of a show called “Everlasting” (kinda like The Bachelor). Its all fictitious and the show’s producer Quinn is forever instructing her staff to do things to get dramatic and outrageous footage for her show. There is a lot of manipulation and a lot of romantic drama – proper trashy TV with only good looking cast members.
The reason I suggest watching these on your own is that you can relax and there’s no one there to judge when you are grinning cheesily at the TV (or crying 😢 )
If you are with your partner then I recommend the following:
Ray Donovan – Ray Donovan is a “fixer” for Hollywood’s elite. He is the go-to guy that the city’s celebrities, athletes and business moguls call to make their problems disappear. He has super dodgy past in South Boston and in Season one his father Mickey is released from jail. This show is brilliant! Definitely a “back to backer”
Goliath – This is an Amazon Original and its pretty epic. Once a powerful lawyer, Billy McBride is now a washed up ambulance chaser (personal injury claims), who spends more time in bars than the courtroom. He’s not to be underestimated though – back in the day he helped to create a very powerful law firm and when there is a wrongful death case that comes up he decides to pursue it in order to exact revenge on his old friend and the law firm. Gritty stuff.
Billions – Wealth, influence and corruption collide in this drama set in New York. You have a US Attorney that’s married to a gorgeous therapist (they are into kinky sex stuff) and you have Bobby Axelrod – he’s a billionaire that made his money straight off the back of 911. The Attorney is forever chasing Bobby and trying to put him in jail. And the therapist works for Bobby…all very “close” and weird but very very entertaining. The writing and the plot are so clever you’re not quite sure anyone could be that devious – it’s like a game of chess but with fast cars and expensive dinners.
Ballers – This show follows Spencer (The Rock) as an ex-professional football player – he’s trying to become a successful financial manager for football players in Miami. He’s building a client base that is mainly made up of his friends and he ends up being more like a life coach to the players – helping them avoid the struggles that come with million dollar football contracts. Lots of half-naked girls and boat parties going on – it’s not half bad.
No.7 Eat only food you like
Last and by no means least – make sure you eat food that makes you happy. If you’re vegan, vegetarian, a meat lover or a chocolate lover make sure your dietary requirements are priority no.1 today. Sod the kids (give them soup or something) – go to Waitrose and splash out on all the things that make you happy. Its one day of the year and you can put yourself first. I’m slightly tempted to just get a ready meal because then I know I won’t have to buy all the ingredients, cook the food and then tidy it away. I’m not that into food (I’m way more of a wine person) so the idea of cooking on a special occasion sends me into a cold sweat. You could always try the HelloFresh recipe box idea – they aren’t too bad for hassle-free cooking and you get to pick what food you want. I tried this a little while back and have a discount code if you want to give it a go. You can read the review I did over here.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these ideas for ways to pamper yourself.
I’ll most likely be doing all of the above, except I am currently watching Riverdale on Netflix because I’ve watched everything else that’s any good ☹️ (Unless you have any recommendations for me?).
Have a fab Valentines Day
Kind regards, Livvy
