Are recipe boxes worth it or way too much money?
First, let me start by saying I hate cooking and I am a very reluctant chef.
I hate food shopping, I hate spending money on food and I hate traipsing up and down food aisles thinking about what the bloody hell to buy.
I like wine, chocolate, and crisps but that’s no way to live and I’m sure it would be frowned upon to feed this to my children every day.
So from the comfort of my kitchen, I started looking at lots of different recipe box companies and HelloFresh™ caught my eye with their 50% introductory offer. (Only running until end of January I believe)
What is HelloFresh™?
HelloFresh™ delivers fresh ingredients (exactly measured out) and new recipes to your door every week. You can pick how many meals you’d like and you can pick how many people you’d like the boxes to be for. You can choose from 2-4 people with 3-5 meals at a time.
All you need is salt, pepper, olive oil, butter and some sugar in your cupboard.
How does HelloFresh™ Work?
You can pick from meat, fish and veggie recipes. They have a selection of recipes for you to pick from each week. Or you can just pick a type of box; “Classic Box”, “Rapid Box” and “Family Box” and you can wait to see what you get.
HelloFresh™ is subscription based so you sign up and then forget about it and food gets delivered to you just as you run out – in some ways this is handy and in others, this is a bit of a pain – what if you’re going away and forget to cancel? Or you’re going out one night?
The HelloFresh™ Recipes:
Our HelloFresh™ Classic Veggie Box consisted of:
- Rainbow Wraps with Re-fried Beans and Citrus Sour Cream
- Coconut Dal with Homemade Chapatis
- Roasted Aubergine with Quinoa, Halloumi and Tomato Salsa.
HelloFresh™ give you an A4 sized recipe sheet showing you the ingredients, pictures, nutritional info, and allergy info.
There was tones of food – really good sized portions and zero waste in my fridge at the end of the week. We even had some leftovers for lunch and supper on 2 occasions. One of my pet hates is chucking food away so this was a big bonus for me.
I had a look at the HelloFresh™ list of suppliers and where they source their food from as I’m a bit picky about this sort of thing. I like local fresh organic ingredients if possible, especially when it comes to meat. I couldn’t find anything about the chicken but they had some info about their pork. Because of this I only chose from the Veggie recipes. Heres a link to the HelloFresh™ food suppliers.
The Taste Test
Our kids loved the Rainbow Wraps and the Coconut Dal but weren’t so keen on the Roasted Aubergine (typical teenagers!). Us grownups loved all the recipes and were really surprised at how tasty they all were. My husband thought the whole idea of HelloFresh™ was silly and he predicted the meals were going to be rubbish – I soon made him take it all back! We were all very happy with the outcome.
The prices vary depending on how many people in the family and how many meals you’d like. But to give you some idea:
- Family Box – 4 meals, 4 people = £63.99
- Classic Box: 3 meals, 4 people= £58.99
It worked out at about £4.90 per person.
I had 50% my order so the whole lot only cost me £29.50 (or £2.45 per person per meal). Not bad at all.
I also checked online with Waitrose and Tesco to see how much the meals would have cost me if I’d been bothered to go shopping. Waitrose was £47.25 and Tesco was 37.00 so I was happy with my choice.

Would I use HelloFresh™ again?
Yes.. the best part was not having to plan anything, not have to go shopping, no food waste and not having to weigh out the ingredients – they all came in handy bags so I just popped them in the utility room and stored the cold stuff in the fridge.
They were easy meals to make – only took about 30-40 minutes, if that. It was easy to tidy up after supper and I liked that you could recycle a lot of the food packaging as it was delivered in cardboard and paper bags.
Overall super handy for the reluctant chef and hater of supermarkets!
If you’d like to try HelloFresh™ then I do have a code that you can use to get £20 off – this makes it totally worthwhile. (Trust me I’ve done the sums)
